Stewardship Forester - Takla Nation Lands & Stewardship

JOB POSTING: Stewardship Forester – Lands & Stewardship Prince George, BC Takla Nation is a vibrant First Nation located in north central British Columbia, with an engaging and innovative Lands & Stewardship Division.

The Stewardship Forester will be the custodian of Takla’s Forestry Stewardship Framework and will develop and oversee the implementation of the associated monitoring of planned forestry activities within the Territory.

In this role, the incumbent will engage and work with Takla leadership and the community to ensure their values are addressed in on-the-ground forestry plans while providing oversight to a team of monitors.

Responsibilities: • Actively engage in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the Nation; • Promoting a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect; • Liaison between Takla Lands & Stewardship, Licensee Partners, and other proponents in matters of natural resource stewardship; • Reporting to the Environmental Operations Manager and the Director of Lands & Stewardship, supervise and mentor Takla staff carrying out Stewardship Monitoring of forestry activities in the Territory; • Takla representative on various committees including but not limited to: Environmental Stewardship Initiative Omineca Demonstration Project (ESI), Takla Forestry Advisory (incl. its Steering committee), and a Joint Stewardship Committee; • Review and provide comments on Licensee and Proponent’s operational plans as to how they align with Takla values, including providing feedback and recommendations on operational aspects and appropriate indicators for monitoring and their associated methodologies; and • Engage and work with Takla leadership, community and its members to ensure their values are addressed in operational, on the ground plans. This will involve communication of the plans, monitoring activities, and outcomes to community and to the Lands and Stewardship team and Takla leadership.

Skills and Knowledge: • Working knowledge and understanding of BC forestry legislation, tenure systems, forestry practices, and Sustainable Forest Management; • Operational forestry experience (e.g., harvesting, roads, drainage structures, permitting, silviculture, etc.); • A degree or diploma in forestry, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in a related field, or an equivalent combination of post graduate education and experience. Applicants with education and experience in other natural resource and/or environmental fields may also be considered. • Registration with the Association of BC Forest Professionals, or near-term eligibility. Registration with other natural resource related associations may also be considered; • Demonstrable experience and innovation related to forestry planning, monitoring, and community engagement; • Excellent interpersonal skills, including effective problem-solving; • Experience with health and safety systems in the forestry industry in British Columbia and environmental monitoring will be considered an asset; • Knowledge of First Nations culture and traditions, and of systemic issues faced by Indigenous Peoples; • Proven ability to prioritize and delegate effectively and to be flexible in a busy, demanding environment; • A valid Class 5 BC driver’s license and ability to travel and work in the field within the Takla Territory; • Proven ability to development and maintain positive working relationships internally and externally; • Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality; and • Ability to travel within the Takla Territory.

Location: The position is based out of Prince George, BC and will involve occasional travel within the Territory and to Takla Landing located approximately 2.5 hours northwest of Fort St. James, BC.
